School Districts
in Hawaii

Hawaii is the only U.S. state with a single statewide public school district. District rankings aren’t meaningful here — every zip code is served by the Hawaii Department of Education. Compare individual schools instead.

📊 Why there is no ranking for Hawaii
Our 1–10 ratings rank each district’s state reading & math proficiency against other districts in the same state. Hawaii operates exactly one public school district — the Hawaii Department of Education — so a rank-within-state score cannot be computed and we do not display one. See full methodology →

School Districts in Hawaii (2026)

Hawaii is unique among U.S. states: the Hawaii Department of Education (NCES LEAID 1500030) is the state’s only public school district, operating roughly 290 schools across Oahu, Maui, Hawaii Island, Kauai, Molokai, and Lanai and serving about 180,000 students in grades Pre-K–12.

Because our district ratings work by ranking reading and math proficiency against other districts in the same state, and Hawaii has no other district to rank against, we do not publish a 1–10 rating or a “best districts” list for Hawaii. A statewide district that automatically ranked first would be misleading, not informative.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best school district in Hawaii?
Hawaii has only one public school district — the Hawaii Department of Education serves every zip code statewide — so a “best district” ranking is not meaningful. Compare individual schools instead; each Hawaii zip code page on this site lists the schools serving that area.
Why doesn’t Hawaii have district rankings?
Our 1–10 ratings rank each district’s state reading and math assessment proficiency against other districts in the same state. With a single statewide district, Hawaii has no in-state peer group, so a rank-based score cannot be computed. Full methodology here.
